Elder Care in Corporate Wellness

Combining VNA's LifeStages with our Corporate Wellness program provides necessary support to working caregivers, but also decreases employee health care costs, which benefits employers. Studies show that caregivers who utilized such programs while employed became more focused at work. Employers – especially larger companies – who have invested in their employees by providing elder care support programs, will enjoy increased productivity and lower healthcare expenses.

Since many elder caregiver activities can only be completed during business hours, including medical appointments, professional consultations, problem solving, and sometimes, emergencies, it is extremely difficult for caregivers not to take time off.

VNA offers a survey tool that companies can use to evaluate their employees' caregiver situations. This will reveal what it means to the business in terms of employee time off and to develop an appropriate plan for each situation.

Recent studies have revealed:

  • Nationally, up to 35 percent of all employees are involved in providing care to aging relatives.
  • Working caregivers cost businesses as much as $33.6 billion a year due to missing work, wasted time, cost of hiring replacement workers and other lost productivity.

Studies have also shown:

  • More than half of employed caregivers said they were less productive at work.
  • About half said they had to take time off during the work day for eldercare.
  • Caregivers’ health care costs are approximately eight percent higher than non-caregivers, costing employers more than $13 billion a year.

As a result of providing elder care coupled with corporate wellness programs to employees, companies are reaping the benefits.

Studies display:

  • Reported savings of $3 to $5 for every $1 spent helping employees find eldercare resources.
  • The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation reported that funds spent by the employer in helping with caregiving have a payback of three to thirteen times their cost.
  • Family-friendly work programs have also been proven to enhance a company’s reputation and aid in recruiting and retention.
